Mars Attacks! is episode 203 focusing on the movie of the same name, as part of the Podward Scissorcast miniseries covering the films of Tim Burton. Posted February 10, 2019.

Summary

A project deep in the making even before Ed Wood was made; Mars Attacks! started life when Alex Cox pitched a film "Based Upon 'Mars Attacks!' A Property of the Topps Company". It passed from director to director, writers trying to pair down the initial scripts massive scope, eventually becoming Burton's 80 million dollar homage to sci-fi B movies with an ridiculously stacked cast. One could argue that this is the last film Burton made that takes into account all of his initial hallmarks: comedy with an inner sincerity to the plots, his eccletic media diet of his youth, and high genre premises. Little did they know a little movie called Independence Day was being developed almost concurrently to Mars Attacks! and took America by storm. Mars Attacks! was left to be labelled as some sort of sad riff on the Roland Emmerich picture when it was released mere months later, partly leading to its box office disappointment.
