Planet of the Apes is episode 206 focusing on the movie of the same name, as part of the Podward Scissorcast miniseries covering the films of Tim Burton. Posted March 3, 2019.
Film critic, Matt Singer (ScreenCrush.com), joins Griffin and David to discuss 2001's universally maligned franchise reboot, Planet of the Apes. Together they examine Burton's missteps, Wahlberg's distain for being in this movie, the legacy of the original series and the devastation of a young Griffin Newman.
A reboot of the classic film series from 60s and 70s had been development at Fox for almost a decade before this much maligned film hit cinemas in 2001. Scores of directors and lead actors attached, but the Burton/Wahlberg connection we got seems so incompatible with the rest of his work and style. What exactly did Burton have to add? A greatly successful film that pretty much everyone agreed shouldn't get a sequel in the same iteration, Fox executives really got by on the skin of their teeth.
