The films of Tim Burton.

Summary[edit | edit source]

Tim Burton: alumnus of the animation program at CalArts, goth-y fellow, filmmaker, Johnny Depp collaborator, blockbuster director.

So how in the world did Burton go from moody disaffected California suburbia kid, to Disney animator in the trenches, to directing the progenitor of modern superhero blockbusters which basically guaranteed him a blank check for the next twenty-five years of filmmaking? How have his series of muses on screen (Michael Keaton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter) shaped Burton's own career in Hollywood? How about Danny Elfman's scores? Burton hasn't shown a lot of diversity in his casting... but was that all his doing, or do #TheTwoFriends have a couple of completely bonkers anecdotes about how some of his efforts on that front were thwarted?

And how many Merchandise Spotlights will Griffin do on the two Batmans alone?

Griffin and David have previously talked about Tim Burton as being an example of a "starter kit director," in that he's the type of filmmaker that aspiring film buffs can really latch onto as their first idea of what an auteur is in film. This is mostly because his movies are often accessible to younger viewers, he has a strong and consistent visual/design style, and his most well-known movies are all kind of about the same themes. Have these traits stayed with him all the way through his career? More info on this miniseries to come as the weeks go by.

Note that there a couple of animated features have been subtracted from this extensive directorial filmography listing; these will be part of the Blank Check: Special Features slate of shows for Patreon subscribers. However, #TheTwoFriends made a point of saying this will not be their modus operandi in the future, and normally all entries in a filmography for a miniseries will be covered in the regular feed. It's just that this particular miniseries was going to take so long, and they wanted to try to get to Dumbo as close to the release date as possible by offloading a couple of episodes into the supplemental feed.

This miniseries is preceded by the Something's Podda Cast miniseries on the films of Nancy Meyers. It is followed by the Cast of the Podhicans miniseries on the films of Michael Mann.

  • A long list of films means a lot of variables in play for the rankings. Should be a barn-burner.
